Our main feature this month is an interesting story told to me by Juan C. Rodriguez of Alice, Tx. on the origin of the barrio in Alice called Rancho Alegre. With the Christmas season upon us, reminiscent to a story sent in by one of our readers, Mary Mijares on how she remembers past Christmases. Want to know about Posadas? Check out the story and gather your own group and reenact this legendary story in your neighborhood. Mrs. Isabel Perez relates a story that she witnessed as a child growing up in Encino, Tx. in which Rosario Altamira de Abrego, a curandera, cured a very sick baby with a home remedy. In our music section read about a young and upcoming Tejano group out of the Gregory-Portland area called Los Arroyos del Rio. A fine young band who has a great future in front of them. This month on December 12 the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated throughout the Americas as she is know as The Patroness of the Americas. In our nature section check out the fiery chilipitin plant, indigenous to our area. We have some great recipes for the Christmas and New Year season in our food section. Need to send a gift for Christmas? Check out our book section for some great reading material. As always check out our regular departments. We would like to thank all our faithful readers and advertisers for their continuing support in making El Mesteño a reality and letting it grow into the next century. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year 2000. Hasta el próximo año, Homero S. Vera |
