Volume 2, Issue 24

Our main feature this month is Vicente Vera's Rancho San Pedro Del Guajolote. Vicente was my great-grandfather Saturnino Vera's brother. Not knowing much about Vicente, I decided to do some investigative work in the Duval County courthouse and came up with some interesting facts about him.

I'd like to thank Chumbe Salinas, whose father Adan was raised by Vicente, for showing me the original ranch house which is still in very good condition. Also thanks to the Ramos family, present day owners, for allowing me on the place. The Ramos are my distant relatives.

I came across a copy of the original document survey of the Agostadero De La Santa Cruz De La Concepción in southern Duval County and it dates back to the Spanish Colonial period of Mexico, providing facts on the land features and rancho of Don Francisco Cordente in 1809.

I'd like to thank Clemente Garcia, Jr. of Corpus Christi for providing the valuable list of students of the 1923 school class of Concepción.

In our music section this month we take a look at a very special music program on radio station Y-92 in Alice, Tx., Tejano music from the old days.

Elisa Gonzales Goodson writes about learning to speak and write Spanish at home while growing up, something that should be done today so as not to forget the mother language. It is always better to know two languages than one.

Be sure to read the story by our contributing writer Joe Premont, "Don't Call Me La Chona". I'm sure many people will be able to relate to that story in their own way.

Also be sure to check out our book section for some great reading material.

As always check out our regular departments and we want to thank everyone for making this issue a completion of two years of El Mesteño.

Hasta la próxima,

Homero S. Vera
