The Casa Blanca building in San Diego, Tx. is our main feature this month. The Casa Blanca has some very interesting history behind it as it has served many uses since the early 1850s. The so called Plan de San Diego may have been hatched here as the man who was caught with the infamous plan, Basilio Ramos, Jr. used to work here when it was a beer distributorship. Historian Robert H. Thonhoff reminds us of a very important battle in Texas history, The Battle of Medina, the bloodiest battle to ever take place on Texas soil. Be sure to read Alonso De Leóns expedition into Texas in search of the French settlement Fort St. Louis. De León was responsible for the establishment of the very first mission in Texas and his very competent scribe, Juan Bautista Chapa was there to write it all down. María E. Garza writes about her uncle, Raul L. Vela and his contributions he made to his fellow citizens in Alice, Tx. and to her family. Cadena from Ben Bolt are our musical artists this month. These two brothers have been in the music business since 1986 and are seasoned veterans of the Tejano and conjunto music scene. Our penwriter, Joe Premont, writes a poem reminiscing about the good old days at Marios Club in Premont. I would like to welcome everyone to our new section on books. We will be adding new books each month in order to have a variety of historical and cultural books for your reading pleasure. Be sure to check out our regular departments and Id like to welcome all the new subscribers and readers to El Mesteño and hope you enjoy it and become a regular reader. Also thanks to our faithful advertisers for their continuous support. Hasta la próxima, Homero S. Vera |
