My wife Letty and I recently went to Mexico City, yes the day we got there we experienced the 6.7 magnitude earthquake. We had just sat down to eat at La Opera Bar & Restaurant in the downtown area when the whole building started to sway back and forth. It was quite an experience. But we made it back safe and sound. After viewing the San Francisco de Asis Church and it being the first one established by the Franciscans in North America and the importance of their role in spreading the Catholic faith and Christianity in the New World, I decided to feature them and the church as the main story this month. The information gathered was from what was written at the church. We take a look at a very talented artisan from the Mexican state of Oaxaca in our Mexico section. In our continuing ranchos stories, we cover José Angel Barrera and Rancho Las Lagunas. Most of our information came from Duval Co. courthouse records, tax rolls, census records, and I would like to thank Nick Gonzales and Romana Barrera Graham, descendents of Barrera, for providing some stories and family genealogy. Our penwriter, Joe Premont, relates to us about his trips with his grandfather down to Roma, Tx. and crossing over into Mexico to visit relatives. It should bring back memories to anyone who spent time with their grandparents in some special way. Be sure to read about General Bernardo de Gálvez, as historian Robert Thonhoff says, The unsung hero of the American Revolution. Check out our regular departments and thanks for being a faithful reader. We welcome all new subscribers and readers and hope you enjoy your first issue. Hasta la próxima, Homero S. Vera |
