Volume 2, Issue 17 |
This month's main feature is on the small community of La Rosita, located a few miles south of Highway 44 between San Diego and Freer, Texas. I would like to thank Mrs. Elodia V. Saenz for providing the history of her family, the Valerios. Be sure to read the interesting story on Capitan Cecilio Balerio, who fought a battle in the brush country of South Texas against the Confederates. Our vaquero is the legendary Francisco "Pancho Chinchillo" Garza of Brooks County. A very colorful person with lots of history in the area ranchos. We are proud to feature a story on one of our own natives of South Texas (Alice and La Rosita Texas), Ruby Nelda Perez who has accomplished a lot as an actress, soloist, and comedienne. She will be performing in Kingsville, Texas at the Little Theatre at TAMUK on March 9-10. Let's show our support for Ruby and be there. Nick Gonzales does his usual great job on writing about our roots. This month he digs a little more into "Our Jewish Ancestors and other Jews". The South Texas Ranching Heritage Festival will be held in Kingsville on February 19-21. See page 17 for all the details. In the cattle brand section, take a look at the brands of women who raised cattle on their ranches. Our featured musician is Enrique Vela, El Rey del Chotiz, one of the legendary accordianist of conjunto music. If you ever wondered who were the Aztec rulers of Mexico before Hernan Cortez came with his conquistadores, check out the Mexico section for a list of the Aztec Emperors and their Nahuatl names and their meaning in Spanish. Be sure to read our regular departments and may you have a great Happy Valentine's Day on February 14. Hasta la próxima, Homero S. Vera |
