Volume 2, Issue 16 |
A new year is upon us, 1999. We hope that the new year brings everyone prosperous changes, a better life, and good health. This month our feature story is on the origins of Falfurrias. Our writer from California, Nick Gonzales, recounts his own story on the origins of Falfurrias and if you happen to drive by the Heritage Museum in Falfurrias, Texas, don't hesitate to stop and check out the beautiful carving by Ret. Col. Cornelius C. Smith Jr. on the legend of Falfurrias. Other features are a story on Silvestre Mora of Falfurrias and his involvement with the Club Progresista Espiritual, Rancho Soledad in Brooks County, and Rancho Mazatlan in Duval County. We are introducing a new section on the old cattle brands of Duval County, 1876-1882, and their origins (ranch owner and date of registration.) In the music section read about Los Talismanes de Fermín Canales. One of the oldest and most experienced vaqueros passed away last month, Don José Ozuna. He was featured as a vaquero numero uno in our May 1998 issue. He was given a vaquero's funeral procession and we would like to honor him with a page dedicated to him. May José rest in peace. I would like to thank my dad, Lino R. Vera, Heriberto "Beto" Barrera, and Mrs. Genoveva Leach for giving me first hand information on the story of my great-grandfather, Eleno Salinas and his adventures with a bunch of horse thieves. I would also like to thank Maroma - Creative Designs for maintaining my internet website. As always, thanks to our faithful readers, subscribers, and
our advertisers who make this publication possible. |
