Volume 1, Issue 12 |
Our main feature this month is Don Placido Benavides, founder of Benavides, Texas. I would like to thank Mrs. Aida Garcia for some valuable information and providing a photo. Some of the sources used were Duval County Tax Rolls for 1876-1900, Duval Book of Brands, and Duval County Deed Records. Thanks to Lydia Canales for providing valuable information on the priests that had served the Catholic Church in Benavides. We continue learning about Father Morfi's book on Texas. I would like to thank Ernesto and Guadalupe Soliz for providing me a photo of our musical feature, Los Rancheros, and information on his life on the Rossi Ranch. Also thanks to Fernando Caballero for his information on Los Rancheros of which he was a member of. As always, Nick Gonzales comes through with his interesting stories on our Hispanic roots. Be sure to read an interesting account about Eustorgio Ramon, captain of the Pronunciados, before the Mexican Revolution that don Ernesto Garza Saenz, cronista of Camargo, wrote about. When you read Nuestra Gente, imagine the history that Natalia Saenz de Lopez has witnessed in her lifetime. She's an incredible lady. Be sure to read a beautiful poem by Humberto R. Martinez describing his childhood in Duval County. El Mesteño is proud to publish poetry of this caliber. Lastly, I want to say that with this issue we have completed a year of publication of El Mesteño. I want to thank all of our sponsors, especially the ones who have supported us since the beginning and the new ones who came on during the year and have also continued to support us. Without your help this publication would not be possible. Also many thanks to our faithful subscribers and readers. |
