Our Main feature this month is Rancho La Reforma of northern Starr & Hidalgo Counties. I would like to thank Dr. Cayetano Barrera of McAllen, Texas for furnishing this story to El Mesteño. It shows the determination of a widow, Doña Antonia Guerra, to achieve the best for her family. Whenever you are in McAllen, Texas, you need to go by the Nuevo Santander Gallery on the corner of Main & Hackberry for a look at an impressive building, inside and out. We take a look at Texas historian, Fray Juan Agustin de Morfi, one of the earliest Texas historians of which most of us have not heard of. You don't read this history in public schools. I want to thank Chumbe Salinas of Benavides, Texas for sharing some beautiful refranes that her late father left behind. Truly words of wisdom and friendship. Interesting story by Maria E. Garza on her trip to Spain. Of course, Nick Gonzales always has an interesting column on our Hispanic roots. This month it's the continuation of the Jews in Spain. Our vaquero this month is Teofilo Salinas, caporal of the R.O. Skidmore ranches in Duval County. Our musician of the month is Amadeo Flores, Conjunto Hall of Famer. He has some interesting stories of his career. |
