A MAGAZINE ABOUT MEXICAN-AMERICAN
CULTURE AND HERITAGE IN
SOUTH TEXAS AND MEXICO

July 1998
Volume 1, Issue 10

Our main feature this month is Don Pedrito Jaramillo, "The Healer of Los Olmos." We give a brief history of him from Ruth Dodson's and Wilson M. Hudson's books. Our intent though, is to bring two stories that have not been recorded in books. I would like to thank my aunt, Paulita V. Gonzalez of Rios, Tx. and Alfredo Herrera of Alice, Tx. for sharing these stories with us. The cover photo of Don Pedrito is a private family photo that depicts Don Pedrito in a different view. The photo was taken by Don Pancho Martinez at the house of Ponciano Ramirez of Realitos, Tx. around 1890.

The featured rancho this month is Rancho Salas settled by Concepion Salas in the late 1850's or early 1860's in southern Duval County, north of Concepcion, Tx. I want to thank Mrs. Manuela Saenz, Mrs. Susie Vera, and Juan Ruben Salas for sharing their oral history with us and Luis Leal Jr. for verifying Concepcion Salas' parents. I also used census records of 1870, 1880, & 1900 and tax rolls from 1876-1910 and SAGA book of births - Cerralvo.

A very beautiful story written about Beto Villa by his granddaughter, Sandra Almendarez-Cadena, is our music feature.

Our featured vaquero is Hermilo "Milo" Salinas, caporal of Los Horcones Ranch for a number of years.
