Our main story this month is on the Tejano Statue-Capitol, a non-profit corporation established to raise funds to place a memorial statue on the state capitol grounds. Armando Hinojosa of Laredo, the chosen sculptor dispplays his winning rendition. Find out how you can contribute and attend a fundraising Gala in Austin this Fall.

We are happy to announce what we think is an important historical find... the battlesite area of Los Patricios, the only U.S. Cival War battle fought in the upper inland Nueces Strip area. By going through an old Spanish surveyed land grant from 1809, the San Francisco, which lies in southern Duval and Jim Wells counties, we discovered two featured landmarks on the map referring to Derramadero Los Patricios and La Mota de los Patricios. Jerry D. Thompson in his classic book Tejanos in Blue and Grey documented the battle fought on March 13, 1864. Be sure to read all the stories related to the battle, the meaning of Patricios, and the land grant itself and the grantee, Juan JoseManuel de la Garza Falcon.

Rodolfo Clarke sends us a family history on a historical figure in Texas and northern Mexico history, Texas Ranger and Judge James Clarke of Rio Grande City in Starr County in the late 1800s.

It's that time of the year for the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center to sponsor the annual Diez y Seis de Septiembre Conjunto Festival. Read about the bands performing in our music section.

Be sure to check out the ad on the back page for this year's Fiesta del Rancho in Concepcion, Texas. It should be another great one.

Be sure to check out our regular departments for other stories.

With this issue we finish out another year, the end of our fourth year in publication - 48 issues. We want to thank all of our subscribers, readers, and advertisers for making it all happen. ¡Gracias!

Hasta la próxima,

Homero S. Vera
