A Magazine about Mexican-American Culture and Heritage in South Texas and Mexico

This month’s main story is on don Esteban Cisneros and doña Eulalia Tijerina de Cisneros, pioneer settlers of South Texas. It had always intrigued me to find out if this Esteban Cisneros and the one who helped colonize Victoria was the same person and why he was buried in Premont. What started out as an investigative story turned out many stories, facts, deeds, and even don Esteban’s will. Every day it seemed like I would find something new, that is one of the reasons this issue is coming out later than usual.

There are many people to thank for their time and effort in helping out with this story, which I do on page 6. One aspect of the story is the oral history told in Roberto Villarreal’s master’s thesis (1972) on the vaqueros of the Kenedy Ranch about when doña Eulalia’s ranch had been fenced in by Mifflin Kenedy. I found the court record where doña Eulalia had sued Kenedy and which the courts say that Kenedy had indeed fenced in her property. Villarreal’s oral history which spanned close to 100 years and two generations came out 100% correct.

We cover the Ranching Heritage Festival Rodeo and Honorees held this past February 18, 2001 in Kingsville, Tx.

In our music section read about the efforts of the Tejano ROOTS Museum in Alice, Tx. in obtaining the status of "The Official Tejano Music Hall of Fame in Texas" and their upcoming 2nd round of Hall of Fame Honorees.

In our Mexico section, don Ernesto Garza Sáenz cronista of Camargo, Tamp. relates to us how the villa of Mier received its name.

Be sure to check out our regular departments for some great information on wildflowers in full bloom this spring and the new book by Jovita Gonzalez.

We welcome all new subscribers and readers and thanks to our faithful advertisers for helping us with their ads. And of course our very supportive subscribers for being with us for all these years, also a big thank you.

Hasta la próxima,

Homero S. Vera
