Vol. 4, Issue 38 |
The Holiday Seasons are upon us. We were worried about Y2K at the beginning of the year and now it is almost over. This month our main feature is on Jack (Burro) and Quarter Horse breeding of the estate of Manuel Sáenz Escobar and Tomasita Vera de Sáenz. They had some of the best mules and one of the fastest quarter horses in South Texas in the early 1900s. In our agostadero section we cover the La Mesteña grant in Brooks county. There are two family reunions that were covered, one in Encino of the Mateo Longoria family and one in San Diego of the Santana Garcia family. This month we take a look at the John E. Conner Museum located on the campus of Texas A&M University in Kingsville. One of the best museums in South Texas. Located in back of the museum in Baugh Hall are the South Texas Archives, the local depository of archival material for the upper Nueces strip area. There are many great collections from which to do research. In our music section we cover the South Texas Conjunto Association, a group out of Weslaco, Tx. in the Rio Grande Valley that is promoting traditional conjunto music throughout South Texas. In our nature section read about the migrating monarch butterfly. We were in the Hill County recently and I came across the
site where one of the early Spanish missions was located, Mission
Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. After consulting the
books Imaginary Kingdom by Jack Jackson and Presidios
Internos the diary of Be sure to check out our regular departments and try to make the Lipan-Apache PowWow at the Heritage Museum in Falfurrias on Nov. 11, 2000. Hasta la próxima, Homero S. Vera |
