I’d like to welcome everyone to the start of our fourth year of operation. I want to thank all of our faithful readers, subscribers, and advertisers for making El Mesteño a success throughout Texas, the United States, Mexico, and Japan. We couldn’t have done it without your support. I also want to give a well deserved thank you to Eddie Pulido, our webmaster who is in charge of our website, www.el-mesteno.com in which people anywhere in the world can access the website. At last count there had been viewers from 23 different countries from all the continents on Earth. Last but not least I want to thank my wife Letty for always being there in helping out in many different functions behind the scenes.

In this month’s issue our main story is on the small but very important international crossing of Los Ebanos, the only hand pulled ferry on an international boundary in the United States.

Read about some earlier history on the Paraje San Diego where San Diego, Tx. is today that I recently came across while visiting in Camargo, Tamp.

In our Agostadero section we cover the Santa Gertrudis grant of don Miguel Gutierrez.

José Garza of Kingsville writes a beautiful poem to his wife on the 4th anniversary of her death.

Recently Marta Perez de Perales passed away and her niece, Araceli Perez Davis informed us and gave me a copy of the eulogy that her husband read at the funeral. It is a short history of the wife of one of the pioneer leaders of the civil rights movements of the Mexican-Americans in the early 1920s, don Alonso Perales. May she rest in peace.

In our music section we visit the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center in San Benito, Tx.

In our Mexico section I translate Don Ernesto Garza Sáenz’ story on Valadeces, Tamaulipas from his book, “Segundas Cronicas de Camargo”.

Be sure to check out our other departments and the ad on the back page for some interesting events from the Goliad Folk Fest in November.

Hasta la próxima,

Homero S. Vera
