Our main feature this month is on a movie that is being filmed in South Texas. ATANASIA is a story of a woman's struggle to leave war torn Mexico and makes her way to Texas seeking a better life for herself and her children. The movie is based on the real life story of Atanasia Escobedo, illegitimate daughter of Mexican General Mariano Escobedo and great-grandmother of Roberto M. Villarreal of Riviera, Texas and author of the book on her life. He and his daughter, Alicia Villarreal-Wallach have taken this task to heart and after many years of hard work their dream is becoming a reality.

In our book section we take a look at Elena Zamora O'Shea, a South Texas native who wrote a historical novel in 1935 called El Mesquite based on the history of South Texas. The book has been republished this year and is now available. We also wrote a short biography of Elena.

Another historic moment for South Texas, the Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Museum in Alice is now a reality. The first inductions into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame were held at the K.C. Hall in Alice on August 25 and the museum opened to the public the following day. If you're in ALice, stop by for a visit to this unique museum dedicated to Tejano music.

In our Mexico section, we wrote about the first hospital established in the Americas, El Hospital de Jesus, by the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés and the adjoining church built next to it.

In our new sections on museums, we take a look at the Duval County Historical Museum in San Diego, Texas. It is housed in an almost 100 year old home. If you're passing through San Diego, make it a point to stop by and visit this nice, old building.

Don't forget to check out our back page for all the activities of the 23rd Annual Fiesta del Rancho in Concepción, Texas... a fiesta with roots dating back to the 1890's. As always, be sure to check out our regular sections and thanks for being a regular reader.

Hasta la próxima,

Homero S. Vera
