Our main feature this month is on the Catholic Mutual Society founded by Father Juan Zavala in San Diego, Tx. in 1934 and soon spreading to many cities throughout South Texas. An organization that was formed to give mutual aid to one another and their families in time of need. This organization still exists today. I’d like to thank Erasmo Pulido of Premont and Lamar Hinojosa and Juan Rodriguez of Alice for their valuable help in gathering information for me for this story. Like I stated in the article, I hope to make people aware of the importance to writing down the names of all the charter members in different cities of this organization so that their effort will always be recorded for future generations. There is also a short artide on the founder of this organization, Fr. Juan Zavala.

In last month’s issue we featured the legendary ranch, El Randado, but didn’t have room to explain the different meanings of randado. In this issue I have several versions to the meaning.

If you have driven by Falfurrias and have never stopped to visit the Heritage Museum you need to take an hour or so to enjoy one of the area’s fine regional museums. We will do a series of articles on the local museums and archival centers of South Texas to inform people where they can go see and research the area’s past.

In our music section we cover a local music promoter, Francisco "Panchito" Garza, one of the area’s leading conjunto music promoters in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, & 8Os.

In our Mexico section read about Mexico City in a study done by Don Pedro Alonso O’Crouley in 1774. Some very interesting facts about one of the most populated cities in the world at the time and still is.

If you get a chance be sure to attend two big events in September, the 21st Annual Hispanic Genealogy Conference in Corpus Christ and the Diez y Seis de Septiembre Conjunto Festival in San Benito, TX.

Hasta la próxima,

Homero S. Vera
