Mr. José "Che" Garza of Kingsville sends us a story of a grand dream reflecting on his childhood. Don Ernesto Garza Sáenz, cronista of Cd. Camargo, Tamaulipas relates two stories; both deal with the Battle of Santa Gertrudis during the French intervention in Mexico. The first one is on the hero of the battle, General Servando Canales, who led the charge against the imperialists, the second story has facts of the battle itself and a muster role of the Camargo Squadron, led by Macedonio Rodríguez. This battle which led to the downfall of Emperor Maximillian's army in the northeast of Mexico and eventually returning President Benito Juárez to power is often overlooked by historians. In our music section we cover a duo, José Moreno and Rigo Garza, that play the bajo sexto and accordion in the traditional Del Valle style of conjunto music. Moreno is also a renowned fiddle player. If you ever wanted to know how the race mixtures in New Spain were interacted, we have a table from a book that was written in 1774 that explains them. A very special Father's Day greeting to all fathers on this month of June. May you have a great one with your families. Be sure to check out our regular departments and as always thank you for being a regular reader and supporter of El Mesteño. Hasta la próxima, Homero S. Vera |
