Volume 3, Issue 30 |
Welcome to our 30th edition, two and one/half years have gone by since we started El Mesteño back in October 1997. I decided to feature the farming and ranching community of Rios, Tx. in southern Duval County for our 30th edition because that it where my roots are. When Saturnino Vera, my great-grandfather married Victoriana Martinez in 1867, their ranch headquarters was across the Santa Cruz community where FM Rd. 1329 crosses the Los Olmos Creek. They later were one of the first if not the first to move their ranch headquarters in the 1870s close to where the present community of Rios is located. I want to thank Paulita Vera Gonzalez for relating the story of the La Gloria Catholic Church as it was the first church in the area. Also my dad, Lino Rios Vera for relating as to how Rios got its name. Read about the family reunion of Eluterio Sáenz and Andrea Bravo in Concepción, it was a big success. Check out this year's honorees of the South Texas Ranching Heritage Rodeo in Kingsville. We featured one of the honorees, Roberto "Robe" Casanova, a veteran vaquero of South Texas. Be sure to read the song about a young boy growing up in the streets, sent in by composer Agustin Díaz de Villegas. The power of the press. We take a look at the first attempt to publish a newspaper in Texas back in 1813 and no it wasn't a social page but a propaganda attempt to remove José Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara of the command of the insurgent forces in Texas, and it worked. Be sure to check out all of our regular departments and as always thanks to our loyal subscribers and advertisers and we welcome all new subscribers. Hasta la próxima, Homero S. Vera |
